To mark the 176th anniversary of the proclamation of the Roman Republic, which took place on the Capitoline Hill on the historic date of 9 February 1849, the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldi’s memory will host a series of celebratory events over the weekend.
The celebrations will begin, on Saturday 8 February 2025, at 4 p.m. in the siege room of the museum, with a conference dedicated to the actuality of the Roman Republic entitled ‘A thread that does not break. The Roman Republic 1849, today’, promoted by the ANVRG in collaboration with the Associazione Mazziniana Italiana and in agreement with the museum. Ephemeral as it was, the Roman Republic was a pivotal event in the history of Italy and Europe that marked a fundamental page in tracing the destiny of Italians with its ideals of freedom and democracy, the path to a then unthinkable future of unity and modernity. Values, these, not only heroically defended on the Janiculum Hill by the forces of the Reaction, but ideally encapsulated in the words of the highest civil profile of the articles of his Constitution, promulgated and decayed on the same day under the violence of the besiegers’ weapons. Speakers include Mara Minasi from the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldi’s memory, Pietro Finelli from the University of Pisa, Elena Musiani from the University of Bologna and Marco Marinucci from the Associazione Mazziniana – La Terza Roma Section. The meeting will be coordinated by Fabio Pietro Barbaro, President of the Roman Section of ANVRG
On Sunday 9 February at 10.00 a.m., the laying of a commemorative wreath by representatives of Roma Capitale, the Metropolitan City and the Lazio Region in the area of Porta San Pancrazio in front of the Museum of the Roman Republic and Garibaldi’s memory (Piazzale Aurelio pedestrian area) will be followed, at 10.30 a.m., by a commemorative ceremony organised by the Associazione Garibaldini per l’Italia, the Istituto Internazionale di Studi Giuseppe Garibaldi and the ANG – Associazione Nazionale Garibaldina. The ceremonies will be attended by the Band of the Municipal Police Corps of Rome Capital, which will perform the best-known songs related to the Risorgimento and Garibaldi’s epic deeds.
At 11.30 a.m. there will be a special guided tour promoted by the Museum entitled ‘Roma, Repubblica, Venite!’, a walk recalling the most significant events and personalities of the 1849 Roman Republic, which will take place in the Heroes’ Park along the Janiculum Walk, between the museum and the Faro degli Italiani lighthouse. The visit, lasting one and a half hours, is free of charge with compulsory booking and in the event of rain it will take place inside the museum.
