The work “Urania’s Passion” has at its core concept Urania, the Greek muse of astronomy and mathematics, which inspired internationally renowned sculptor Lorenzo Quinn for “Investing for Future. Women and STEAM: from gap to plus,” MSD Italy’s social responsibility project created to promote science without gender inequality.
Thus two large female hands stretched upward hold a representation of the atom, the symbol of science, to testify to the indispensable contribution of women to the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) disciplines and to reiterate the importance of overcoming the gender stereotypes that still keep women away from science.
The work-four meters high and placed at Sapienza University of Rome, a symbolic place of knowledge and education for the younger generation-leverages the universal language of art to encourage young people to pursue their passions, transcending cultural barriers and prejudices, thus promoting change toward a more equitable and inclusive future.
The artist. Lorenzo Quinn is one of the most highly regarded contemporary artists, known for his figurative sculptures of great symbolic impact. Among his most celebrated works is “Building Bridges,” the monumental installation exhibited at the Venice Arsenal that celebrates the six universal values of humanity: friendship, faith, help, love, hope and wisdom.
