\u2018Elusive peace\u2019<\/strong> in eastern DRC: Is negotiation still an option and what role can local and international actors play? This topic will be addressed on 28 February<\/strong> in the IAI-hosted webinar from 14:00 to 15:10.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions between Kigali and Kinshasa over the conflict in eastern DRC involving M23 rebels and other armed militia groups operating in the region have escalated since the failure of peace talks in December 2024. On 26 January 2025, M23 rebels took control of Goma, displacing thousands of people and killing hundreds. Humanitarian organisations warned of a looming regional humanitarian crisis. In response, the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) convened extraordinary summits to formulate a comprehensive peace strategy. A joint EAC-SADC summit on 8 February called, among other things, for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution through the Luanda and Nairobi peace processes. Previous high-level mediation efforts have failed to end the conflict. What role can international actors, including the AU, UN, EU, US and others, play in supporting peace efforts in the region?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
