His Highness the giraffe

On the occasion of International Giraffe Day (https://giraffeconservation.org/) on Sunday 23 June the Rome Bioparco is organizing the ‘His Highness the Giraffe’ event day. From 11.30 to 17.30 you can participate in numerous activities focused on the tallest mammal on the planet and discover all the curiosities about the three giraffes present at the Biopark, the females Dalia and Acacia and the male Magoma.

Thanks to the engaging game ‘the giraffe in numbers’ it will be possible to know many characteristics such as height, the length of the tongue and tail, the weight of the heart. The educational activity ‘A long, long neck’ will take place within the educational laboratory in which it will be possible to observe and handle models of the skull and the seven vertebrae that make up the giraffe’s neck to discover the adaptations and the magic of evolution. Furthermore, you will learn that giraffes have the same number of vertebrae as humans, even though their necks measure up to two meters!

A safety net’ is the title of the activity which, thanks to two teaching machines, will illustrate the incredible anatomical mechanism (rete mirabilis) that allows giraffes to lower their heads for example to drink, compensating for changes in blood pressure.

Finally, by participating in the game ‘Many coats, one species’, aimed at younger children, they will create puzzles representing the coats of three of the nine existing giraffe subspecies, to understand their mimetic function.

The day’s activities are included in the cost of the ticket.

The giraffe is a species threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and fragmentation and poaching. The Rome Biopark participates in the conservation of the species by joining the European captive breeding program called EEP (European Ex situ Project).
