Woodcut workshop on end grain wood with Mei Chen Tseng
As part of and in support of the Immediate Surroundings exhibition, underway in the exhibition halls of the Palazzo della Calcografia until April 30, the Taiwanese artist Mei Chen Tseng offers a workshop illustrating his engraving technique. The engraving workshop will be held on two dates on April 12th with a repeat on the 19th of the same month.
Workshop topics:
1. The technique: work in progress, i.e. the demonstration of the artist’s technique to illustrate the different types of signs and the possibilities of chiaroscuro.
2. Tools: different shapes of tools will be introduced to obtain different shades and effects on end grain wood. The importance of the way to sharpen the burins will also be addressed.
- Wood: compact, hard but elastic (e.g. boxwood, lemon, cherry, maple), cut horizontally avoiding knots, dried naturally, cubed and assembled.
4. Paper: what type of paper is suitable for end grain woodblock printing? Experiments will be carried out by tearing, gluing, inking, printing, drawing on Italian, Japanese, Taiwanese paper, etc.
