Mohamed Amjahid: Identity and culinary culture between Italy and Germany
Italian cuisine is highly popular in Germany and has become widespread throughout the country. During his stay in Rome, journalist Mohamed Amjahid explores how Italian cuisine has helped shape the identity of Italians living in Germany. He investigates how the preservation of their culinary traditions has enabled them to adapt to a foreign environment and build their own community. Amjahid’s research in Rome includes not only interviews and the examination of historical documents but also practical elements such as collecting recipes and visiting restaurants and grocery stores operated by former Italian workers who returned from Germany and their descendants.
Mohamed Amjahid, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1988, is an investigative journalist and author of political nonfiction. He writes for various media such as ZEIT, Spiegel, taz and Süddeutsche Zeitung. He edits the culinary column “Mohamed’s Kitchen” for Monopol magazine.
