Max Liebermann – An impressionist from Berlin
The Goethe House Museum is pleased to present the inauguration of the first large Italian retrospective dedicated to the German-Jewish painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935). The artist is considered today the most important exponent of German Impressionism. The thirty-two works, coming from German and Italian collections, reconstruct the most significant phases of his artistic journey which lasted more than sixty years.
Liebermann, a great admirer of Goethe, had close ties with France and the Netherlands, but Italy also played a decisive role in his artistic career. He undertook numerous trips to the peninsula and his works became part of prestigious museum collections.
With this exhibition, developed together with the Liebermann-Villa in Berlin, the Goethe House Museum also celebrates the 150th anniversary of Impressionism.
The catalog of the Max Liebermann in Italy exhibition is published in German and Italian.
