Expodemic
Expodemic is the second edition of the Festival of Foreign Academies and Cultural Institutes in Rome, which starts from the Palazzo Esposizioni Roma and spreads throughout the city. The festival which will unfold between the various academies and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni will take place from 7 May to 25 August.
The exhibition recounts the close link between the birth and development of the exhibitions and the history of the academies, both through the involvement of foreign artists currently resident and with historical documents.
Rome not only hosts the highest number of international cultural centers, whose events have intertwined and developed since 1666 with the foundation of the French Academy, but it is also the place where modern exhibitions were invented. For over 40 years, between 1680 and 1720, the painter, secretary of the Academy of San Luca and regent of the Congregation of the Virtuosi at the Pantheon, Giuseppe Ghezzi, organized a series of exhibitions of important works present in the monumental complex of San Salvatore in Lauro in the collections of Roman aristocratic families, thus giving rise to the concept of modern exhibition. Thanks to the ability to understand his own historical period, Ghezzi, with this series of exhibitions, makes art public, proposing a modern and democratic idea of culture and thus acting as the first curator of history.
Expodemic, starting from the exhibition at Palazzo Esposizioni, spreads across the city with a series of posters created specifically for the occasion and distributed free of charge in the various locations of the cultural partners. A path that illustrates the importance of the rhizomatic relationship between the Palazzo Esposizioni and the foreign Academies and Cultural Institutes in Rome, highlighting the richness and diversity, as well as the absolute relevance of this cultural archipelago.
The exhibition is also enriched by a public program of meetings, performances and screenings hosted at Palazzo Esposizioni and by the numerous exhibitions and events organized in the Academies and Cultural Institutes.
