Everything takes place in the crypt of the Basilica of Sant’Alessio. The scene represents the side of a small village square, where the gypsies have set up their caravan and erected a ramshackle stage. It’s night. The glimmer of a fire, the stars and the moon. An acetylene lamp is hoisted on top of a pole. A few stools, suitcases, a fire. The gypsies are having dinner. Someone is watching them. It is the people of the village who expect a theatrical performance. A suitcase filled with costumes opens. The acetylene lantern is lit. An old gypsy opens an ancient book.
