Home Events Shows Clement Cogitore’s cinema at Villa Medici

Clement Cogitore’s cinema at Villa Medici

On Wednesday 6 April, at 6.30 pm, the philosopher Jacques Rancière will analyze Cogitore’s work in a conference entitled “Fiction of spaces“, focusing on the abolition of the boundaries between contemporary fiction and documentary. If the latter essentially maintains the irrecusable presence of places and bodies but then plays on the space that contains them, on the possible effects of proximity and distance, the traditional fiction willingly abandons the plots and the outcomes of the stories to focus better on their sensitive matrix, on time and on the effects related to it. Rancière will examine just how these two elements are articulated in Clément Cogitore’s films: time that generates repetition but also expectation and fear; the space that unites the bodies or distances them shows them or makes them invisible.

Following, the 2017 film Braquino will be screened: a melancholy journey into the nature of the Siberian taiga in which two families live in self-sufficiency, with their rules and principles, who refuse to speak to each other despite the nearest village being 700 km away. And on an island in the river another community is created: that of children.

On Thursday 7 April, the film Ni le ciel ni la terre, shot by Cogitore in Afghanistan in 2014, will be screened. As the withdrawal of the troops approaches, Captain Antarès Bonassieu and his platoon are assigned to a control and surveillance mission in a remote Wakhan valley, on the border with Pakistan. Despite the determination of Antarès and his men, the control of this apparently calm sector will gradually escape him so that one night, the soldiers will begin to mysteriously disappear into the valley.
