The melody of verse, the music of the soul: Pushkin and Tchaikovsky

On Friday, June 6 at 6:30 pm, on the occasion of Russian Language Day and the birthday of the great poet Aleksandr Pushkin, we invite you to the Literary and Musical Salon “The Melody of Verse, the Music of the Soul: Pushkin and Tchaikovsky.”

Tchaikovsky’s life is inextricably linked to the legacy of Pushkin. The genius of Russian classical music knew the poet’s work from early childhood; the French governess of the Tchaikovsky family, Fanny Durbach, called Petr “little Pushkin” because of his poetic talent. For Tchaikovsky, Pushkin became the foundation of his musical creativity. The composer’s three major operas-“Evgenij Onegin,” “Mazepa” and “The Lady of Spades”-reflect the depth of Pushkin’s work.

Students of Russian language courses at the Russian House in Rome and pupils of Russian schools in the Italian capital will read Aleksandr Sergeevič’s poems in Russian and Italian. Romances on Pushkin’s verses and music by Petr Tchaikovsky, Mikhail Glinka, Aleksandr Dragomyžsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Gioachino Rossini will be performed by soprano Maria Smirnova and pianist Maksim Skogorev.
