The toolbox against gender violence

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women La Sapienza joined the #NoExcuse campaign, the reference hashtag chosen by UN Women, the United Nations entity for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Numerous events were hosted from 18 to 28 November within Faculties, Departments and Libraries to raise awareness and involve the university community in the fight against gender violence.

The central moment of the initiatives that involved all Sapienza structures was the #NoExcuse meeting: nothing justifies violence. Sapienza for the construction of a culture of respect which was held today, 26 November, in the Aula magna of the Rectorate, during which the rector Antonella Polimeni announced Sapienza’s new transdisciplinary course, entitled “The toolbox against gender violence”, which will become part of the University’s educational offering starting from the second semester of this academic year.

The meeting in the Aula Magna continued with two round tables moderated by the delegate for Equal Opportunities Policies, Anna Maria Giannini, attended by: Loredana Segreto, general director; Maria Cristina Pisani, president of the National Youth Council; Gemma Gentile, student Gender studies, cultures and policies for media and communication; Fabio Lucidi, vice-rector for the Third and Fourth Mission (enhancement of knowledge) and relations with the student community, Valerio De Gioia, consultant Parliamentary Commission of inquiry into feminicide, as well as all forms of gender violence, Fabrizia Giuliani, coordinator of the Technical Committee scientific expert of the National Observatory against violence against women, Flaminia Saccà, president of the STEP Observatory. At the end, the concert Fear we have not. When popular music tells of women’s struggles, the EtnoMuSa della Sapienza choir performed some songs from the oral tradition between the 19th and 20th centuries, an expression of women’s struggles.
