Europe matures

After having gone through one crisis after another for fifteen years, in an extremely unstable and fragile geographical context, the European Union has emerged much more cohesive than before from the two enormous challenges it recently had to face: the management of the pandemic and the common reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. And now it is even preparing to welcome new countries. That difficulties have strengthened the Twenty-Seven seems like a paradox, but it is not. In fact, as Jean Monnet argued, «Europe will be forged in crises and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises». Now, however, in order not to succumb to the threat of sovereignist and populist political movements and to make its historic mission of defending freedom, democracy and respect for human and civil rights truly unavoidable throughout the continent and in adjacent areas, the EU must understand how to adapt its structures to new challenges and how to reform the mechanisms through which it functions. The legislature that opens with the June 2024 elections is the right time to do so. And this book explains what the next steps should be to build a more attractive and even stronger Europe.
